
What Galician verbenas are and how to organise them
The band strikes up, there is a smell of octopus and churros, and the village square fills up until well past midnight. That is a Galician verbena: one of the hallmarks of summer in Galicia.
This article is for two kinds of people. For those who are curious and want to understand the tradition, and for those who have to organise one and need, for example, a DJ who keeps the dance floor full until the end. If you are a festival committee, a town council or a neighbours association, this is for you.
A verbena is not improvised: behind a great night of celebration there are weeks of work.

What a Galician verbena is
A verbena is the popular festival that celebrates a village or its patron saint, almost always in summer and almost always at night. The square turns into a dance floor, there is a band or a mobile disco, and people of all ages gather to dance, chat and eat.
In Galicia they carry a special weight. Every parish has its festival, and many families plan their holidays around the village verbena. It is not just music: it is reunion and community.

When and where: the verbena calendar
The peak season runs from June to September, although there are festivals spread across the whole year. San Juan opens the summer, and from there the patron saint festivals follow one after another by region: Rías Baixas, A Costa da Morte, inland Ourense and Lugo, the Rías Altas...
A tip if you are visiting
Ask in the village itself. The best verbenas are rarely the most advertised: the locals know them, and word of mouth is still the best guide.
Who organises a verbena
Behind almost all of them there is a festival committee: volunteer neighbours who raise funds, hire the bands and coordinate the setup. In other cases it is the town council or a cultural association that takes the reins.
If it falls to you, the first thing is to form a small team and share out the tasks. One person cannot do it all, and a verbena has many fronts open at once.

What you need to organise your own
Before thinking about the music, there is a less glamorous but essential part: the paperwork.
Permits and insurance: first, even if it is the most boring part
You will need the council permit to use the public space, public liability insurance and, depending on the case, noise and drink-selling licences. Sort it out with time to spare: in summer the deadlines pile up.
The gear: mobile disco, stage or DJ
This is where the mood is decided. For a neighbourhood verbena a good DJ and a proper sound system are usually enough. If you want live bands or orchestras, you will need a mobile stage that can handle the setup.
